:: BAGHDAD IS AN IDEA ::

You will never know, because it’s a place from the past.
You will never know, because it’s a depiction of the present.
You will never know, because the narratives you hear are mediated repeatedly.
All you can know is the invisible space you create.
All you have is the idea.

“You begin to ignore some of the safety issues, the security concerns. But like any noise and you’re like what is that – if a firework goes off, you wonder was it a bomb, what was it this — was it that? But you get used to it all. The other day, well about six months ago — about 40 or so rockets were fired into a place near the airport in Baghdad and I could hear the rockets flying and I could hear the explosion when they landed and the land shaking but when I walked into the street people are just watering their gardens, because they have become so denatured to this.

“One of my favorite memories is when it was really hot, jidu would go out into the garden and he would be watering the plants and he would hold the hose in a way where the water would flow out into an arch. That garden smelled so much like orange blossoms. I loved playing with the orange blossom flowers. I would take them from the trees and make necklaces out of them. Now, everytime I see a bottle of orange blossom scented perfume, I have to buy it.”

“I just think you’re an idiot if you don’t come. I genuinely mean that. “
